The water, the sunshine, the frothy drinks – they’re all so, well, intoxicating! They make you want to just melt into the local culture and go “native.” Heck, it might even make you want to pick up roots and move! But if you’re just checking out a new location it’s wise to be a little practical when shopping for clothes there.
So, what are the best reasons to buy something to wear while on vacation? Here are a few.
It reminds you of a wonderful time.
Whether or not you decide to relocate, having something in your closet that reminds you of a care-free time is no small thing. As we age, experiences become more important than things, But those things can be the very things that trigger all the same happy brain chemicals that you experienced when you were in that land of “no-worries, no laundry.” Just be aware that whatever you buy in a resort area might be something you can only wear when you are far away from home. Climate and the cultural norms when you live determine the usefulness of items in our wardrobe. When it’s snowing outside, you’re not going to get much wear out of that plumeria-print Hawaiian shirt.
It’s in your best colors.
If you’re lucky, you will find something that is not only true to the local culture, but that looks fabulous with your coloring. That’s because no matter how beautiful that flowy dress, cool shirt, intricate shawl, or hand-knit-by-locals sweater is, if it’s not right for your coloring, it’s going to get worn very rarely. Appreciate and admire the colors that speak of a new location and lifestyle but only buy the ones in colors that make your skin glow and your eyes sparkle.
It’s a thing of beauty in and of itself.
You simply love the handiwork of the locals (assuming it’s not just something imported to a desert island from China.) Although the kids these days don’t want a lot of the mementos and tchakes we have accumulated over the years, a cool item from a resort area will be a great piece to hand down.
You’ve enjoyed the local cuisine so much that you can no longer fit into the clothes you brought with you.
Well, yes, a very good reason, unless you’re planning on going on a serious diet when you get home. In that case, it will only remind you of your excesses.
Finally – you are seriously considering relocating.
Now that is a perfect reason to buy clothing in a new area or a resort town. A lot of life coaches encourage us to dress for the life we want to live, or for how we see ourselves five years from now. If your life plan includes a change of location, the clothes will help you fit into that new world, new place, new life.
